We used 3D Studio Max for camera mapping our 3D matte paintings
on "Day After Tomorrow", which I had never used before.

Don't mean to offend anyone, but frankly, I HATED this package
for camera mapping. So buggy and difficult. Maybe I just had a bad
experience with it, but someone's going to have to REALLY sell
me on the benefits of this program before I'll ever use it again in
production.

hi rick,

you may just have had ill luck with the scene or whatever. i've never had a bad expierience with 3dsmax and camera projection, so far.
would you tell, what went wrong?

to thenextside:

i don't want to turn this thread into a software love-and-hate-thread.
i do not use xsi, but i think, it's save to say, that you can use any 3d software for camera projection. be it maya, xsi, 3dsmax... even though, rick seems not to like 3dsmax or maybe it was visa versa?

Whats the Difference between Max7 "Per Pixel" camera mapping vs Max 6 Camera Mapping?

Maryam

In Max 6 you need to add more faces to the geometry in order to make it work properly.
In Max 7 it will work regardless of number of faces. ( as far as distortion )

As far as my underestanding the renderer works more acuretly now.
You can see the results at scriptspot.com forum;
