And here are some of the matte paintings in action.

I'll tell you something, its going to be really interesting to see how sky captain holds up with all this bluescreen. Those images do look amazing though.

Wow! Those pics reminds me of my low budget music video project:) Everything was bluescreen and shot on Cine Alta HD.
No track marks on those Skycaptain shots so i guess they are locked off or minimal movements.

It looked fine to me.
And I even enjoyed it as a film!

Most shots looked fine to me also except for the Shangrila shots..
Somethin about it looked off (Maybe it looked too much like Lord of the Rings Rivendale:)) and the ocassional overuse of light spill on characters.
Overall it was a cool film and i enjoyed it very much.. amazing work by artists.. The credit list was fun to watch!!! :)
I have to watch it again on DVD.

Given the large amount of work required for this picture, how did the comp quality vary from shot to shot?
I've been told there was some ropey stuff in there.

I don't remember any ropey stuff. As has been mentioned, Shangrila was bit OTT, but how do you do a realistic paradise? I agree that it was similar to, and just as real as Rivendell in 'LotR' (which was sets with miniature/mattepainting extensions).
I do remember REMEMBERING that it was 99% comping after FORGETTING for long stretches of the fim.
Especially good was the cinema sequence before the robot attack on the city. The lighting was stylised in a Hollywood way, but the shots were totally believable as a real place.
