This is a tough topic I think... mostly because a ton of the folks who pioneered this field did so before cataloging, before websites, before a lot of the work was preserved in any way or could be scrutinized. Don;t get me wrong, the new stuff is great, but back in the day you didn't have the crutches that we do today (er, resources...) ;-) These folks could PAINT. I think that the skill to paint these is in some people supplanted by their digital skills. Maybe better results via digital, but the work by these folks blows me away more than a lot of the recent stuff.

Anyway, here are some names we should probably all have some idea about, and if folks ever get a chance to add links or images they find on them to appropriate threads (or to this one!!!) that would rock:

Peter Ellenshaw (get The Garden Within)
Mike Pangrazio
Albert Whitlock
Percival Day
Chris Evans
Matthew Yuricich
Chesley Bonestell (also a great SF and astronomy painter)

Many others, but these are a good start. I'll do all I can to find links and such too...

Derek,

Thanks a lot for the names and your suggestion.

Some of Matte Painting masters either own a company or they devoted their talent to one specific company.
And we are trying to recognize them as their company and have them listed in the companies section (http://www.mattepainting.org/forum/viewforum.php?f=25).

And those with personal web site are listed in the matte painters section (http://www.mattepainting.org/forum/viewtopic.php?t=46).

And for the matte painting legends, we are planning to add a section in the Matte Painting in Action called “Legend’s gallery “, to show case their works which continues to be a source of inspiration for all of us.

Hi all..

Great thanks that a website for people interested in matte painting now exists.

A few people that should be mentioned.

I know of a few veteran matte painters, some that have worked with Babyfoot productions and deserve mention for world class work.

Yannick Dusso. www.dusso.com (http://www.dusso.com) (lord of the rings, etc)
Wayne Haag. www.emeraldcitydesign.com (http://www.emeraldcitydesign.com) (fifth element, lord of the rings)

Very very nice works

Cheers

Josh,

Welcome to mattepainting.org. Dusso is listed on the site directory, And for Wayne Haag, I'll add his company in the company directory.
If he has a personal web site, I can add that to arttists directory as well.

Thanks a lot for the link

In case no one has heard, Michael Pangrazio has returned to matte
painting after a nine year hiatus. I had the pleasure and priviledge
of working with him as part of the matte painting crew on "The Day After
Tomorrow". He's a great guy, and a fantastic artist.
