Lukas Lancko's new stuff
I decided to make one thread for all my posts. I think its better than infest forum with new single threads again & again. So, Im going to repost all my works here and also add new ones, of course. Enjoy:)
One of first MP attempts. I wanted to try some cityscape destruction over-paint.
Btw. original plate is well-known "Sin city" HDR shot by Paulo Barcellos Jr just found
on internet + some free stock here and there. My original res was 3k wide, so some
tiny details probably wont be such obvious with current preview but anyway I hope
you will like it.
Actually, this MP was created as a part of MySpace fullscreen backdrop and thats
also reason of crazy aspect ratio. As the original picture continues down it is
overlayed by web interface in the middle, so I kept this part blank and theres
nothing interesting of course so I cropped it.
I was supposed to follow dark fantasy / sumerian atmosphere so I tried to create
whole shot from scratch using few stock photographies and basic extruded
3D model of the band name.
Matte-painting Ive done for 12-panel booklet layout of metal core band XXXX.
Original image aspect ratio was 4:3 and 5,5kx4,1k res, but this one is cropped
1:85:1 version. So, everyone whos interested in whole image, you can find it
at my website.
SOLE METHOD mp
A3 visual used for t-shirt of austraian metalcore band SOLE METHOD. Brief for this
matte-painting was to create super-natural dark lava landscape with feeling of sort
of fantasy illustration. Btw. usage of this art was also reason why this piece miss any
atmoshpere & smoke.
Whole scene was build from scratch with using textures, tablet painting here and
there and own 3d modeled rock formations.
SUBURBAN TERRORIST mp
Matte-painting used for artwork and CD packaging of of death metal band. Blind
and devoured Justitia should express abomination of modern era based on
material values and money, lack of humanity etc. etc.
Whole image was created 2D in 6,5x1,5k res (this is cropped version because of
better center composition), used many plates, day to night teqniques, additional
advanced painting, texturing and postproduction techniques. Hope you re going
to like it and C & C more than welcome! ;)
There are plenty of things 'wrong' with this image in terms of believability / realism. Since it's for a purpose other than film/tv, some of them could be artistic decisions to aid readability - I don't think a photo-real image is necessarily appropriate here.
However, if you wanted to work towards a true photo-real image at any point, here are some things to think about:
>Buildings that are backlit will be almost silhouettes, with very little visible detail
>An object lit solely from behind will not have specular highlights on the front of it
>The actress, the ground, the LHS wall, the background city and the sky each have a different light sources
>The ground and the sky have a green cast, while the city is slightly orange / warm
>Fires give off light, and therefore create their own highlights and shadows
As I said, since this isn't a traditional matte painting, but an illustration with a specific set of requirements, a lot of these comments can be ignored.
I've done a quick grade / paintover to demonstrate.
at first Id like to thank you for your time and effort you put into this lesson,
I appreciate it. Your advices were really handy and I will keep them in mind for next
time, for sure. But also you are right about purpose and detail readability. Anyway
as for autodidact it was good to see where I went wrong against photo-real stuff
and learn something from it, thank you once again;)
