Here is a new matte I have been working on.
The idea was to create an 'Evil' factory in a black and white style with splots of color. Kind of a boring idea in general but it's been fun to work on.

I was born and grew up in the rust belt of New York with shut down/abandoned steel mills scattered all over the place - so I think that might have been part of the inspiration.

I asked a bunch of friends and family what their idea of an evil facotry would be and got some pretty distubring but funny results. Kind of made me question who I surround myslef with.

In any case, I would appreciate any comments, crits or ideas on this.
Geometry was created in Maya and all other work was done in photoshop with Wacom Tablet.

actually i like your matte, reminds me of the matte paintings in sin city.

I think you've mixed the original plate well with the rendered geometry.

as for the lighting/rendering; i would use some indirect lighting to avoid those very black self shadows (maybe physical sun and sky in mental ray).


If I were fix anything on the picture, i'd probably play with the light of the lamp
and also the lower left corner of the painting.

Thanks for the crit. I am already working on the indirect lighting and softening the shadows.

I was wondering about the lamp light. i like the element there, but it is so close to the edge that I was afraid the bright light was drawing the eye away from the focus. Maybe I'll break the light eventually. Not sure.

What part would you lower? The geometry on the left side (silos)? Or are you talking about that portion of the plate?

Perhaps dirty up the glass and dim the light.

Also - if this were a production shot there might be some animated steam, smoke, or workers walking along the gangway. Something that would draw the eye to the factory itself.

Just some thoughts.
