Default City in Desert Valley - 10-24-2006, 09:38 PM

This is my first attempt at a matte painting. I would really like some crits from the community here. I have taken alot of what i've learned from my lurking here and applied it to this picture. Please let me know how I can improve it.

It is still a WIP (of course) I hope to make it very sci-fi with ships n taller buildings. just getting the picture to look right before I start painting in my own details.

Thanks in advance!

Looks good for the first matte. The foreground has to be darker I guess.

Very cool idea.
I am by no means an expert on the subject (I have my two first matte-paintings ever posted right under this...) but I suppose all critique is useful so here goes:
Since the sun is coming from the back I suppose the buildings would be much darker on the side facing us. The way they are lighted now it seems like they are lighted more from the left. The big houses would also cast more shadows.
Actually now that I look at it it seems like there are two suns, one straight ahead and one to the left. Is this intentional? If so, perhaps it should be emphazied clearer.

The lighted spots on the mountains to the right seem too saturated and a bit too blurred.

The road on the left side is too blurry and non photorealistic to match the rocks.

Like I said, I'm no expert but and I could be wrong but these are just my observations. Overall a great start though!

try not to blur the tip of the bushes
but really mask them out.
check out more utah calanders. they've got the nicest lighting.
your idea is excellent and the collage is nice for the first few steps
but try to blend elements more with light.
you seem to be motivited, so keep it up.
