Hi i am new in mattepainting. I use photoshop and i like to now how you guys paint this rocks in your pictures. I tryed and failed. So my rocks are always so smooth. You have any tutorial or tips? Thank you a lot.
make a selection of the rocks, change to lab mode, select lightness channel and select filter unsharp mask, play with the settings till it looks gritty and life like. Change to colour mode then convert to rgb voila gritty rocks. Select new layer paint in detail using brush select 'f' and use bevel and emboss play with the settings. Try using multiply or any of the blend modes. just experiment to death , when something works write it down. then when you need the same effect or texture you have something to refer to, Enjoy
the most effective way, as mentioned previously, is to paint a quick sketch, then add in textures from photos of actual rocks. However, I can appreciate the desire to learn how to paint from scratch as exercise. I think the problem is that your brush is way too soft. try using one of the more textured "chalk" brushes (assuming you're in photoshop) with a few different shades to give more of a sharp, rugged texture.
