Hi, well the best suggestion I can give is check out http://www.thegnomonworkshop.com/dvds/g ... int_g.html now these dvds are not free but they are worth every penny! I love them and bought all of them myself as reference. Another suggestion is http://www.dylancolestudio.com , http://www.dusso.com , http://www.stoskidigital.com/ , and of course mattepainting.org is loaded with info and wonderful paintings of environments!
And here is a good book to own http://www.ballisticpublishing.com/book ... _painting/ but if it is a little on the pricey side you can find it on amazon.com cheaper! Here take a look http://www.amazon.com/Dartiste-Painting ... 146&sr=8-1 and here is a great book you should start out with first! (GET THIS BOOK!) http://www.amazon.com/Invisible-Art-Leg ... _b_title_4 And for digital painting in general here is a book http://www.amazon.com/dartiste-Digital- ... _b_title_1 All of these will explain Matte Painting very well. That's the best I can do. I hope that helps.

Well debashish, I guess you are right in a way? I felt I would point kunalkalra2001 in some direction with out creating a huge paragraph here on this thread, because in depth "Matte Painting" could go on for a really long time but to make it simple the bare minimal facts are these:
1. A good solid understanding of Light and Exposure
2. Painting in a photographic style
3. A good understanding of Perspective (strong focal point)
4. A strong Composition
5. Some Camera Knowledge and Animation
6. Color (for matching plate)
7. And plenty of contacts and a huge network of friends in the Industry helps to get started...LOL

Well that's it in a nut shell, I hope that explains it a little more thoroughly.

Mattepainting is the outcome of the idiotic choice I have made for my career which makes me erase TV antenas all day long to make the Lisbon City view look like it is the beginning of the XX Century.

What mattepainting is not is Castles in High Hills and Orc's Fighting Humans while little guys with huge feet travel across the world to drop a ring in a volcano.

If you want to be a mattepainter because you like Starwars or Lord of the Rings, bear in mind you will probably never work on either project in your entire career.

Take care,

Ricardo.

i dont see anyone addressing the question "what is mattepainting" i guess simply put its the creation of sets for films, tv, print, games, etc, where physically building them isnt possible or cost effective. So its done using various forms of art. it could be as far back as when they used to paint on glass then film the actors through the glass in the parts of the glass that were not painted on, it could be created in 3d, it could be digitally painted, it could be created using photo elements or any other technique you can think of. i like to distingueish between normal painting and mattepainting by giving the painting a purpose other than just being a painting. In a film no matter how great the matte painter did his job im only going to think "ok, dude walking infront of a huge castle" or if the painting is the only thing in the shot like some panoramics on lord of the rings im going to think "nice establishing shot" not "ooooo look at that painting" the mark of a good mattepainter i guess is that we get lost in the magic of the film with the techniques used as just being another tool in making a film.

sorry for the rambling there

See the Job offers like this one from Pixar and see how they define a mattepainter.

Matte Painting is usually photomanipulation, sometimes painting to create, alter or augment a background for TV or film. Often it entails removing aerials and satellite dishes of which I have done my fair share, but sometimes it is creating a shot of the earth for spaceships to fly past or huge mountain ranges to give a shot a sence of space.

I have had lots of boring stuff to do and I have had fun stuff, you have to take it in your stride and try to just manually paint the boring stuff as a challenge.

As for interview technique, I dont think that is the issue. I dont know your work, but I would say that ones work speaks for itself. If you can be useful to a company, they will hire you. Keep learning and you will get there.
