There really isn't any "trick" to creating a low-light
or nighttime scene, any more than there is a trick
to making a daylight scene or environment.
The key to anything is OBSERVATION. Go outside
at night and let your eyes adjust. Make note of what
you actually SEE. Same thing with a dimly lit room.
Really LOOK AT IT.
True and careful observation is (IMO) one of the most
essential things in art. Getting past the symbol of the
thing and discovering the truth of the thing itself.

It is good to fully understand how to make the most of your low lighting photographs, photo paintings, using and observing the correct indoor light fixtures it helps to understand the basic types of light being given out by each.
