This is the first in a series I hope to do based on a short story. The gist of the story is that an alien race populates a series of planets in a far away solar system millenia ago. The sun of their adopted system is now going supernova, and so the inhabitants of the planets are being evacuated to a neighboring system through these giant teleportation gates. The gates and ships are 3D with some matte painted details, the rocks are assembled from about 7 or 8 rock photos I took during a recent trip to Big Sur, manipulated and painted over heavily in Photoshop.
