To be a sucessful matte painter I think first of all you need to know how to actually draw and paint before you can get into integrating photos or using 3D models.
To make this thread on-going I think a sketch thread would be nice.
[sijun speedpainters would be right at home i think...but the subject matter will be landscapes and locations here]
So the rules are to basically choose a photo reference and create a sketch drawing of the photo ref. Concentrating on lighting and the overall mood of the ref choosen.
Limit the painting time to less than 2 hours to keep it a sketch. To concentrate on light and mood only, you won't have time for details.
No blending of photo elements.
Have fun :D I will update with few examples of my own in a bit.
I think it is a good idea to pick up that challenge. It looks interesting. I am going to try it, with one photo. As an educational exercise it is very good. I'll post the results....
i like this idea. i'll probably do a lot more of these little quick sketches - pretty good exercise to help you establish a palette.
[edit: these were done without reference, because I can't read or understand the rules posted in the first post of this thread. Or, I can, but .... oh well]
