Default WIP - The road to Orodruin - 10-07-2010, 09:59 AM

Hi,
this is wip mp i`m doing now for matte painting challenge ... The image is based on the "Lord of the rings movies" and i`m trying to recreate the mood.
Still have to do the foreground and eventually make camera move
Some C&C will be great
thanks

Nice one mate!
C&C? Here you go: :)))
- I think there is too much separation visible.. whan I mean, is that is you'll do the rest of the DMP like you did in the middle of the image (these rocks nicely blend each other and give more felling that they are connected) that will be great!
-also, but that just my taste, I would put the volcano more down and separate it with some visible part of ground lava-push it a bit into BG, instate of adding more and more mountains up.

But that just my taste Thyn, but I have to say.. another great piece from you to look at! ;)

Good stuff Thyn, I agree with the above comment, it would be great if you could add some ground lava flowing down the mountain or add a impression of it.

looking forward to the finished piece.

Actually, I don't agree with the comments above. I think it's perfect in this version. Mount Doom is very far so it's not logical from this distance that we see it's lava in detail. Better leave them to fog&environment haze. Think about the mattes in Two Towers not in Return of the King. This one is very very similar to those made by Dusso. Lighting&color is perfect. It's like it's from lotr indeed.well done.

PS: It looks like we see Orodruin from Emyn Muil.

in the grim darkness of the far future, there is only WAR.

Hello thyn nice work man, really matching the lotr mood!!!

I like I lot the composition, I feel the background is a little bit flat, but really a solid concept man! for sure one of the 3!!! ;D

Thyn - I like the extra cloud / pyroclastic cloud detail you have in the update, but I actually prefer the mood in the first one. I guess it depends what area you are trying to depict. There were parts of the Emin Muil that had that raking light coming in under the heavy atmospherics and catching some of the spiney trees, but other areas that were purely rocks. The second version feels a bit too green and grassy, I would deaden that a bit and maybe add a few dead trees if you like that version, or go back to the pure rock surfaces more like in this matte that Dusso did:

It has to be said though that this is another awesome piece of work from you. You are really nailing these every time at the moment!

Nick

Thanks for your comments guys ! Really helped me to see some major problems with this one.
de gerardo: your idea is great, but i would prefer to stick to the movies as much as i can. And maybe i shoudn`t use Mount doom either...
nickmarshallvfx: totally agree with you. I will work on that.
Matty: i`ve had the same problem :)
I hope it`ll be better in the next update.

I did some changes in order to simplify and improve the composition. I think it has more depth now. Will work on the camera movement soon.
