Default Coke Siege commercial - 02-09-2011, 08:06 AM

Here's a sample of the work we produced for the new Coke Siege Superbowl commercial.
Painting Practice were drafted in by Framestore (UK) to help develop the environments and
fulfil all of the mattepainting for the entire commercial.

The brief from directors FX & Mat (Nexus) was to create a look that reflected the feel of fantasy art and concept painting.
It was important to retain a painterly look and feel without adding too much in post.

For each painting we created an alternative 'speed' version which was dialled in by the compositing team.
At one point the lighting was shifted across the whole show which meant that we had to re created many of
the original blue skies with plenty of work going into the paintings from the compositors.

Every shot needed to be dealt with in some way which meant working closely with the VFX team and painting over
renders, adding patches of sky and refining snow elements here there and everywhere.
Overall the look was fantastic - a living piece of concept art which was exactly what the directors wanted.

Many thanks to German, Russell,FX& Mat, Diarmad, Sarah and all the gang at Framestore.

Really nice work. Love the fact they went with a 'painted' feel to the advert, rather than a purely realistic one.

Shame the paintings were graded to a milky-looking glow in the final spot, would have been nice to see them a bit better.

Can someone frontpage one of these?

The ad is hilarious and I also like the painted result very much. Thank you also for sharing the process, very interesting.

+1 for frontpage.

Brilliant stuff Justin. Love the painterly look.
Really great seeing the speed painting compared to the final.

Great stuff but agree with Alex, in post they could have gone for more sharper look with much less glows.

Hi Guys, Thanks for the very kind words.
It was a shame about the light change, all our original work was painted in bright day light and then the lighting changed so we had a lot of skies to re work and the comp guys changed the bulk of the paintings in grade.

It still looks okay in the end, we have loads of pieces that we painted but they are so random they wouldn't be much to look at on here.

Cheers

Justin
