Default Image for friend, - 04-14-2014, 10:34 AM

done this as a gift for a friend, yes there is live action elements in it,

its quite lo res the background was taken off two google earth shots, and the X wing is my friends model (Steve Neill) I comped and matte painted the damage and every thing else.

Its called inconsiderate parking. It was done in celebration of him completing the studio scale model of the x wing,

Thanks

Nice one!

I think the CG X wing rendered pretty well. Maybe the shadow is a bit too dark if we compare it with the shadows of the practical cars (specially the back of the black truck)
Also, the black oily smoke is way too transparent. Maybe you are using a transfer mode like "multiply" or "darken"?
I think that kind of smoke would occlude completely whatever is behind it. It's actually tricky to get that sort of smoke to look right because it's hard to find a good element like that with the correct lighting for your plate.
I guess an option could be to render some 3D smoke with the oily and heavy look.
Another trick I like to do when using semi-transparent smoke is to blur the BG so it looks more diffused and gives a bit of extra volume to the somke.

This is the kind of smoke I personally think it would feel good in your image.

Hope it helps!

Pedro.

Pedro, would you mind if I used that photo, as the smoke in mine was really annoying me, and thanks to you for taking the time to write, will work on those parts,

Thank you very much

Richie

Oh well, that photograph I posted was a quick Google search I did to show you the idea of what I had in mind. Feel free to use it if you like.
If you are worried about copyrights and things like that and you want to create your own asset, it is still good that you gather a lot of references from the internet, books or even real life.
Though, I don't think it would be a big deal if you used parts of images you've downloaded from the internet, specially if your final product hasn't a commercial purpose.

Cheers!
