So I’ve been playing around a lot with my camera. Trying to figure out which lens and settings would be best to photograph plates and elements. I realize the situation always changes everything …but I was curious what you guys use and shoot if you are trying to shoot a plate (a typical landscape shot) with the very minimal lens distortion?...

Try to keep everything flat and go for a wide angle lens but like you already mentioned it varies from shot to shot.

My main two lenses are an 18-135mm zoom, which isn't the bwst lebs in the world but alllws me to get very wide or really long if i want to photograph an element in the distance. Also I use a 50mm 1.4 prime for lower light shooting and for doing tiled shooting at bracketed exposures. If I have the time and a tripod then I like to shoot bracketed exposures to create 16bit EXR's from later. When I was away in New York over the new year, I did a couple of 180 degree shoots from our hotel balcony, which consisted of about 40 bracketed tiles. I used some proprietary tools to stitch it, and that created about a 40k stitch, so when I need to grab stills of certain areas i can render an EXR from that and even if I push right in on that to render an element in the far distance I can normally still keep around a 5k resolution, works great for matte painting! I'll see if i can rended a low res lat-long to share with you.
