Default The Ansonia. Matte-painting/concept-art - 10-04-2012, 08:21 PM

I would like to share with everyone, my new personal project matte-painting, my previous personal project was "Roman Harbor" I have created in 2008. I worked on many projects since as a lead matte-painter, 3D environment artist and recently become an art-director.
I was always deeply fascinated by this gorgeous Beaux-Art building "The Ansonia", that is still mysteriously standing on intersection of the Broadway and 73rd street since 1899. During it's own 113 years old history it went through some minor transformations and in my digital-painting I would like to show it's first decade of glorious days in 1904. As a half hotel and half residence Ansonia was build specifically for musicians and artists to reside, creating complete soundproof environment for opera singers by building thick walls and floors. Famous people who lived there where Arturo Toscanini, Igor Stravinsky, Theodore Dreiser, Angelina Jolie, Natalie Portman; many movies been filmed there including "Single White Female" 1992, and new TV show "666 Park Avenue".
If you interested, step by step tutorial on how I created this digital painting will be published next month by Digital Design Magazine.

Kind regards,
- Edward Grad

Default Mysterious waves. - 10-04-2012, 08:43 PM

My idea is that mysterious waves around it, are the past resident's souls which are stuck in Ansonia forever...
I did spent a years living in this neighborhood, but just a bit north on Broadway. Moving-in to those gorgeous over 100 years old buildings of Manhattan, I was always thinking what those walls could have seen? And how many great artists created their master-pieces here?
It's all was a big part of my inspiration to create this digital painting and has helped me to be strong in my roller coaster film career.
